This is starting at the finish, I know, but helpful I hope.
Sew binding on quilt as you normally would leaving a 12 inch gap and long tails on each side.
Bring one side to the center and fold back and crease.
Bring the other side to the center and fold back and crease.
Make sure you give it a good hard crease with a fingernail or your favorite creasing tool.
Open left side of binding flat and make sure you can easily see the crease.
Take the right side of binding and lay so the fold is alined with the crease vertically and the crease from the right side lines up with fold from the left side.
(sorry about the blurry photo)
Open the binding out flat so right sides are together and the creases and folds line up horazontally and vertically. Use a ruler to mark the seam line diagonally where the the two strips cross. Stitch on the line.
Lay binding flat on quilt to make sure length is correct before cutting ends.
Trim seam allowance to 1/4" and finger press to one side. Finish stitching binding onto quilt. Fold binding around edge and finish as desired. No tools to keep track of or measuring required.
Happy Binding!
